So its that time of the year - DrupalCon Austin 2014. It’s a gigantic think-tank filled with Drupal users, developers, designers, business people and evaluators. Days will be filled with trainings, sessions, code sprints, core conversations, and other social events.
We are very excited to announce that Antonio Estevez, an Open Source Architect and an experienced Drupaler at DOOR3, will be headed to the great state of Texas for this year’s DrupalCon from June 2 to June 6, 2014! Make sure to stop by and say hello. We are looking forward to connecting with fellow Drupal developers, learning about powerful changes coming in Drupal 8 making everything from web services to translations easier and more powerful, partner meetings/dinners with Pantheon and Acquia, and, of course, the parties! Be sure to follow us on Twitter @DOOR3, where we’ll be posting some live updates from the convention.
If you are going, here are some people you should keep an eye out for:
Fabien Potencier, aka fabpot: Fabien is the founder of the Symfony project. Drupal 8 is essentially a massive rewrite of Drupal around the Symfony2 framework. This will drastically improve menu routing, configuration storage, web services and a whole host of other important components in Drupal.
Angie Byron, aka webchick: Angie is the Drupal 8 core maintainer. She’s been active in the community for nine years, has over six thousand commits to Drupal core, over a thousand documentation edits, wrote the book Using Drupal, and works with Lullabot to train people all over the world, among way too many other things to list here. She’s also a very cool person in general and works hard to get people involved and make them feel welcome in the community.
Josh Koenig, aka joshk: Cofounder, along with Zack Rosen, of Pantheon which provides outstanding Drupal hosting services. Josh and Zack are two of the original members of DeanSpace dating back to 2003/4. That group (which later became CivicSpace Labs) is widely credited for helping to bring Drupal to a wider audience and grow a larger community around it. They also know how to throw a heck of a party.
Morten Birch Heide-Jørgensen, aka mortendk: Morten doesn’t lead sessions - he creates unforgettable experiences. His sessions are among the funniest I’ve ever seen but also incredibly informative about all things front end. He’s also a great guy to have a beer (or six) with. His Drupal.org profile basically says it best: “They call me the King! - one day i will explain, but that requires a beer, an excuse & that you didn’t hack core.” Do not miss this one.
Dries Buytaert, aka dries: This one goes without saying, but must be mentioned for those new to Drupal. Dries, or as he is sometimes joking referred to, “Benevolent Dictator for Life” originally created Drupal in his dorm room thirteen years ago. He is UID #1 on drupal.org. He is the co-founder and president of the Drupal Association, co-founder and CTO of Acquia, and the co-founder of Mollom (an anti-spam service). And he gives a heck of a keynote.
There are so many more I wish I could add here, but I’d never finish this post. Go and meet as many people as you can; you are guaranteed to have a blast meeting some of the most interesting and entertaining people around, all while learning some pretty awesome stuff.
Even if you can’t make it this year, you can still follow along on irc.freenode.net in the #drupalcon chatroom, or follow the #drupalcon hashtag on Twitter. All of the session videos will be posted on the DrupalCon website after each day, so you can watch them from home, or if you were there catch up on ones you couldn’t make.
Will you be there? What are you excited for at DrupalCon this year? Drop a line and share your opinion in the comments section below.
